Your appointment with the complex epilepsy (tertiary) service

This page explains what you and your child can expect at the appointment with the children's epilepsy service.

How do I get an appointment?

You and your child may have been referred to the children’s epilepsy service by another team at Evelina London, or by another consultant in south London and south east England. For more information on the referral process, see our epilepsy referrals page.

Changing or cancelling your appointment

If you need to change or cancel your child’s appointment for any reason, please call 020 7188 4000 (Mondays to Fridays, 9am-5pm). At other times, please call the appointment cancellation line on 020 7188 9900 or email PaediatricAppointmentsNeurology@gstt.nhs.uk.

Please tell us as soon as possible so we can offer the appointment to another patient.

Before your appointment

Please bring along any medication that your child is taking and seizure diaries, if you have them.

It may also be helpful to bring along your child’s school reports.

During your appointment

You and your child will see a consultant or specialist registrar at the appointment.

You may also see a specialist epilepsy nurse at your first appointment.

At the appointment, we will weigh and measure your child and ask some questions about their diet and lifestyle to help build up a picture of your child’s health and development.

If we need to take a blood test, we will do this on the same day. If we need to do a test or scan such as an EEG (electroencephalogram), we will arrange with you to do this on another day.

Your child’s first appointment with the service normally lasts about one hour. Follow up appointments normally last about 30 minutes.

As we are a teaching hospital, students and visitors may be observing the team. We will always ask your permission for them to observe your appointment.

After your appointment

At the end of the appointment, your child will either be given a further appointment, referred to a scan or test, or discharged back to your referring doctor.

We will write to the referring doctor to explain what happened at the appointment and what will happen next. We will send a copy of this letter to you, your GP and any other clinicians or healthcare professionals involved in your child’s care.

The letter will have a contact number if you have any questions.
