Evelina London teams collecting their BMA Patient Information Awards.

Information for patients created by teams at Evelina London has been recognised by the British Medical Association (BMA) as part of their annual Patient Information Awards.

On Monday 18 September 2017, the BMA (the professional body for doctors in the UK) hosted their annual Patient Information Awards to recognise and encourage excellence in the creation of information for patients. The judging panel presents special awards to the best resources in specific categories. Special award first prizes and runner up prizes are made from a list of highly commended resources shortlisted from hundreds of entries.

Two resources created by teams at Evelina London were recognised by the awards. Films ‘Pre-assessment and operations: what to expect at Evelina London’ were awarded Runner Up in the Information Produced by NHS Trusts and shortlisted for the Information for Children award.  The Childhood Stroke Handbook, a project in collaboration with the Stroke Association, was Highly Commended.

Pre-assessment and operations: what to expect at Evelina London

  • Runner Up for the special award for Information Produced by NHS Trusts
  • Shortlisted for the Information for Children award

Coming to hospital for an operation or planned test can feel scary and unfamiliar, especially for a child. These specially made patient information films were designed to be watched by families with their child to help prepare them for a stay in hospital.

The judges said: “This is an impressive and clearly effective resource. The idea was innovative and the consultant who initiated it went the extra mile to put in the effort to develop this resource. It is a delightful production which I would be well-pleased to see if my child was going in to hospital. The team should be commended on their commitment and enthusiasm for this production, and their care and concern for their patients and their families. Hopefully other hospitals will be able to follow your example.”

The award was collected by, Dr Rachel Deacon, consultant anaesthetist and lead for the development of the films, Dr Shyamala Moganasundram, consultant anaesthetist, and Sylvia Jones, pre-assessment nurse.

The Childhood Stroke Handbook

  • Highly Commended

The Childhood Stroke Handbook includes information about what stroke is, how to recover from it, and gives children advice on how to talk about their feelings. It was developed as part of the Childhood Stroke Project – a collaboration between the Stroke Association and Evelina London. The book is the first dedicated resources to explain stroke in childhood to children.

The judges said: “This is a good resource for young people and their families. It gives a good basic outline of what a family may face when a child has a stroke. The information is presented in a logical sequence that replicates the ‘journey’ the child will make. The sections ‘what can help’ are very useful and they should help give the young person a sense of what will happen in the future.”

The team behind the creation of the handbook include Dr Anne Gordon, consultant occupational therapist, Anna Panton child stroke project manager and family support worker and Florentina Meggersee, family support worker.

Well done to all teams who contributed to the resources.
