General medicine referrals

Who can refer

We accept referrals from:

  • GPs
  • consultants at Evelina London Children’s Hospital
  • consultants at other hospitals

We accept all general referrals for very unwell children under 16 years old for diagnosis and management.

Referrals will be screened and directed to the appropriate consultant for management. We do not perform developmental assessments (this service is provided by community children's services).

How to refer

GP referrals

All NHS GP referrals must be submitted using the NHS e-Referral Service (eRS) using these details:

  • Speciality: Children's and adolescent services
  • Clinic type: Other medical respiratory
  • Service name: General paediatric's referral assessment service (RAS), Evelina London Children's Hospital, RJ1

Referrals sent to the nhs.net mailbox or by post from GPs will not be processed.

We're always happy to receive advice and guidance enquiries from GPs on eRS, if health professionals require support on management in primary care or are unsure about whether a referral is required.

For some of the commonest presentations in children, the NHS England Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT) children and young people advice and guidance document (Word 4.8MB) outlines expert clinical advice on primary care management as well as advice on when to refer.

Referrals from other health professionals

Hospital doctors or other health professionals should send a referral letter by email or post using the details in the referral contacts box on this page.

Urgent referrals

All urgent referrals should also be referred by e-RS. If rapid access is required the referral should be discussed with the consultant who is available through Consultant Connect Monday to Friday, 11am to 7pm.

GPs can contact the children's assessment and referral service (CARS) to speak to a consultant paediatrician for advice on managing children in general practice and referrals to hospital services.

Our rapid access outpatient facility is for children who would benefit from a prompt paediatric assessment, but who do not need to urgently visit the emergency department.

To refer a child to the rapid access outpatient review service, please use Consultant Connect.

Emergency referrals

Emergency referrals should be made to the consultant between 11am and 7pm using Consultant Connect. Out of these hours, phone the main hospital switch board and ask for the general paeds SPR on 0339.
