Get involved in children's cancer services

We're looking for young people (aged 16 and over), or family members (parents, siblings, carers or relatives) who have experience of children's cancer services or specialist children's services. Joining our boards and advisory groups will make sure that the voices of patients and their families are central to our programme of work.

We would like to include people from the catchment area the future centre will serve, including:

• Brighton and Hove
• East Sussex
• Kent and Medway
• south east London
• south west London
• Surrey Heartlands
• West Sussex

Meetings will be held both online by video call and in person. We will pay you for your time (in line with the London Living Wage) and reimburse your travel.

Why join

Joining one of our boards or advisory groups will mean you will be directly involved in decision making. Your insights will inform our programme of work to plan for the transfer of services and help us develop the future children's cancer service at Evelina London Children's Hospital.

We're currently looking for people to join the first of the meetings in September so are encouraging people to send applications by 30 August 2024. If you can't do this, there will be future opportunities to join.

Programme Delivery Board

This board is helping us make sure the current children's cancer services are transferred to Evelina London safely and at the right time.

Meetings will be once a month and last for 2 hours.

We're looking for:

• 2 family members who have experienced children's cancer services or children's specialist services.
• 1 children's cancer charity representative

Partnership Advisory Board

This board is helping us make sure patients and their families are involved in our plans.

Meetings will be quarterly (4 times a year) and last for up to 2 hours.

We're looking for:

• 5 young people (aged 16 and over) or family members who have experienced children's cancer services
• 4 representatives of a relevant charity, community or voluntary sector organisation
• 3 Healthwatch representatives

Clinical Advisory Group

This group is helping us make sure families' experiences influence decisions about treatment and care.

Meetings will be once every 2 months and last for up to 2 hours.

We're looking for 8 to 10 young people (aged 16 and over) or family members who have experienced children's cancer or children's specialist services.

Travel, Access and Accommodation Advisory Group

This group is helping us identify needs and make decisions about travel and how families access the service and accommodation.

Meetings will be every 2 months and last for 2 hours.

We're looking for 8 to 10 young people (aged 16 and over) or family members who have experienced children's cancer or children's specialist services.

We have reached an exciting step in our work to safely transfer children’s cancer services to Evelina London Children’s Hospital. Involving patient representatives in the process, we have recruited a team of architects and engineers to work with us to create the right space and environment for children and young people.

Patients and families are central to us getting this right, and we would love you to be involved in this work.

We're inviting you to help design the future Children’s Cancer Principal Treatment Centre by taking part in online sessions on Microsoft Teams. 

Parents, carers, children and young people who have experienced children's specialist services at Evelina London or children's cancer services are welcome to join these sessions. Anyone under 16 must be joined by a parent or carer. You do not have to come to all of the sessions.

How to join

• who you are, and the details of anybody joining with you
• if you need any support to attend

Session 1: Wednesday 28 August, 6pm to 7.30pm

At this session, we will:

• introduce the Evelina London Children’s Hospital team and the design team
• tell you what we've been working on over the last few weeks
• show how feedback received during the public consultation has already been included into very early designs and ask for your input on them

Session 2: Wednesday 11 September, 6pm to 7.30pm

By joining this session, you'll get the opportunity to provide important input which will help us finalise an overview of the floor plans.

At this session, we will:

• reflect on feedback from the first session
• show you how we have included this feedback in an overview of the floor plans and ask for your input on them

We’ll agree the floor plans with clinical teams in the current service the week after this session.

Session 3: Wednesday 25 September, 6pm to 7.30pm

In this session, we will:

• share with you the overview of the floor plans agreed by the clinical team and ask if you agree that we should move to the next stage of the design process
• explain the next steps in the design process and how we would like you to be involved. This will include looking at plans in more detail and working with us to make sure we create the welcoming and family-friendly environment that children and families need
