The start of construction work on our new state-of-the-art day surgery centre has been marked by an official ‘breaking the ground’ ceremony.

Our new five-storey building will open in 2022 to give us more space for planned diagnostic and surgical procedures. This will mean that children and young people will be able to have diagnostic and day surgery treatments in one place. It will also provide two new operating theatres, specialist clinical facilities and space for future services.

The centre is part of a series of ambitious new developments planned to help meet the growing demand for our services.

Marian Ridley, Director of Evelina London, said: “We are delighted to begin work on our new day surgery centre. It will provide diagnostic and day surgical care in one setting and give us two new operating theatres, which will help reduce the time children and young people wait for their treatment and improve the experience for families.

“Over the past 10 years, the number of children and young people needing our world-class services has grown substantially. We now care for more than 95,000 families a year and the number of patients in our care continues to rise.”

The new centre will be located next to our hospital site on Lambeth Palace Road and is being constructed by Morgan Sindall Construction.

Richard Dobson, area director for Morgan Sindall Construction, said: “Evelina London Children’s Hospital is a key provider of children’s services in London, and our team is extremely pleased to have been appointed to this project, which will enable the hospital to grow and expand and continue its important work well into the future.

“Our team is well versed in successfully delivering complex healthcare developments across the UK, in addition to operating on highly compact, prominent urban locations in the capital. We look forward to bringing this knowledge and expertise to bear on this project and working closely with our project partners and Guy’s and St Thomas’ to deliver this landmark new development for Evelina London.”

Marian Ridley added: “Our exciting plans to expand our children’s hospital will mean we can provide outstanding healthcare for even more children and young people who need us, meeting their needs now and in the future.

“This will help us to realise our vision for Evelina London to become a comprehensive specialist children’s centre providing accessible, responsive 24/7 specialist care for the sickest children when they need it.”
