Thumbs up for Evelina London

Evelina London Children’s Hospital has achieved an ‘Outstanding’ rating by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) with children’s community services rated ‘Good’.

In its report published on Thursday 24 March, the CQC praises hospital staff who its inspectors found to be ‘motivated and compassionate.’ Inspectors also reported that patients using community services were ‘treated with dignity and respect’.

Evelina London Children’s Hospital is the only children’s hospital in England to have been rated as ‘Outstanding’ by the CQC to date. Community services rate in the top 33% of children’s community services nationally.

Inspectors highlighted many examples where the hospital and its staff had made ‘special efforts to meet the needs of children, young people and their families’.  They also commented that families felt ‘listened to by health professionals’ and ‘involved as partners in their care’ in community services.

The report highlights that the integration of community services to become part of Evelina London Children’s Healthcare in 2014 has had a ‘positive impact’ and allows the Trust to provide a ‘truly integrated model of healthcare’ to children across acute and community services.

Medical Director, Dr Sara Hanna says: “We are really pleased with our ratings and we are delighted that the dedication and compassion of all our staff has been recognised.  It's also clear that the inspectors understood the value we place on building strong relationships with our patients and their families.

“We are always seeking to improve and have many things to work on but, as long as we continue to put children and their families at the front of our minds, we will be going in the right direction.”

The CQC rates Evelina London Children Hospital ‘Outstanding’ for providing ‘caring’ and ‘well-led’ services and ‘Good’ for ‘safe’, ‘effective’ and ‘responsive’ services. Children’s community services are rated ‘Good’ in all categories.

Evelina London is part of Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust which achieved a ‘Good’ overall rating.

CQC inspectors visited the Trust’s hospital and community services from 7-10 September last year with further unannounced visits taking place later the same month.
