The aim of this course is to develop the necessary knowledge, skills, understanding and application to achieve advanced autonomous practice in paediatric critical care and retrieval medicine.
The full MSc is undertaken on a part-time basis over 3 years. The course has recently been revalidated and is delivered in collaboration with London South Bank University. It is aligned to fulfil the requirements of the core curriculum standards by the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine ACCP Curriculum (2015). The course is also aligned to the 4 pillars of advanced practice (HEE 2017), which is a marker for advanced practice education.
Real world impact
The role of the paediatric critical care practitioner promotes continuity of care from the point of patient retrieval through to patient discharge. This course provides a pathway to enable clinicians to access different routes for career progression, which support service delivery.

This course will equip clinicians with the knowledge and skills to be an autonomous paediatric critical care practitioner, enabling experienced clinicians to undertake advanced roles. This pathway will create opportunities within the workforce to improve retention of knowledge and expertise. This course provides students with the principles and approaches they need to ensure the highest quality of care. Paediatric critical care practitioners are a valuable addition to the wider workforce and improve outcomes.
Student success
Individuals who have completed this course are now practicing at the level of band 8a clinician within the NHS. This course enables professionals to act as autonomous practitioners within retrieval services including as the retrieval lead. This course is helpful to students who wish to take up senior leadership roles leading services in the UK or internationally. It is ideal for individuals who want to contribute to the research and education of others within advanced paediatric critical care.
