Neuromuscular referrals

How to refer

Please send a written referral by email or post to the neuromuscular service, including details of the child’s GP.

For referrals for a child with suspected muscular dystrophy or myopathy, please include creatine kinase assay (i.e. a blood test) results in the referral details.

Who can refer

We accept referrals from consultants at Evelina London Children’s Hospital and other hospitals.

As a tertiary service, we expect the local paediatrician to have assessed any children for referral. This is to make sure that any initial investigations have already been undertaken and that existing referral pathways for children with neurological disorders in the south Thames region are followed.

If you're not sure whether a child should be referred to the regional neurologist, or direct to the neuromuscular service, please email gst-tr.elchpaedneuroreferrals@nhs.net and one of the team will get back to you.

GP referrals are not normally accepted. Under certain circumstances we'll consider a referral. For example, for a child with a neuromuscular diagnosis who has has recently moved into the area.

Urgent referrals

Please email gst-tr.elchpaedneuroreferrals@nhs.net and mark as urgent.

Emergency referrals

For emergency referrals, please contact the on-call children’s neurology team by calling the main switchboard on 020 7188 7188 and ask for the children's neurology registrar or consultant on call.
