Neurodevelopmental diagnostic clinic referrals

Who can refer

We accept referrals from NHS colleagues including:

  • GPs
  • children's consultants
  • child and adolescent psychiatrists
  • children's neurologists

We will consider referrals from allied health profession and psychology colleagues who work in multi-disciplinary teams, with approval from a children's consultant or psychiatrist.

How to refer

Referral letters should include a specific diagnostic or management question for the team to address. Please send them by email or post using the referral details on this page.

We accept referrals from local teams in the following circumstances:

  • when there is a dispute or uncertainty about diagnosis, often where there is complexity due to additional and overlapping challenges such as neurodevelopmental, neurological, physical or mental health problems and social adversity
  • when there is uncertainty about best management or support (medicine and therapy), for example in the management of distressed behaviours and other mental health problems in neurodivergent children and young people. We expect the local services referral to remain open with continued involvement with the child and family to facilitate co-working. If medicine is considered we can only start this process if a local team is involved who will support ongoing prescriptions through shared care if needed

Please note that patients referred for a diagnostic query may be offered a one-time appointment for intervention or support in conjunction with local services.

We examine each referral to make sure there is a distinct question or issue that needs to be addressed. A specific team is allocated to each referral.
