Each year our patients take part in the British Transplant Games, a national sporting event that aims to celebrate life and promote transplantation.
We encourage all our children and young people who are well enough to compete to do so. The event is a positive and emotional experience for all involved. Spending time with other families and staff away from the hospital allows children and young people, parents and carers, and families the opportunity to relax and receive support and friendship.
The Games costs around £900 per child. We try to subsidise the cost for the families and remain very grateful for the continued support from Evelina London Children’s Charity and Guy's and St Thomas' Kidney Patients Association. We also fundraise with the children and their families, helping to support their team.
Our team - the Evelina VIPs - has won the Best Kidney Team shield for the last 6 years. The team are co-managed by Grainne Walsh, transplant clinical nurse specialist, Cathy Gill, senior play specialist and Pat Hayes, children's pharmacy manager.
