Guy's and St Thomas’ Chief Nurse, Avey Bhatia and Evelina London’s Director of Nursing, Janet Powell with Dame Ruth, Kate and Edith on Sky ward.

Chief Nursing Officer for England Dame Ruth May, NHS England Deputy Director of Children and Young People’s Nursing Kate Pye and NHS England intern Edith Longdon visited Evelina London’s Children’s Hospital to hear all about our specialist services for children and young people.

During the visit on Wednesday 6 July, Guy’s and St Thomas’ Chief Nurse, Avey Bhatia and Evelina London’s Director of Nursing, Janet Powell, were delighted to give Dame Ruth, Kate and Edith an insight into the specialist services provided at the hospital.

Visiting Sky Cardiology ward and the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), they were able to witness first-hand the dedicated care provided by the multidisciplinary teams. Evelina London’s PICU is the lead centre for critically ill children and young people across the south Thames region, and provides a wide range of services and clinical expertise.

Hearing about our new Children’s Day Treatment Centre, the team explained how it has been designed to provide everything required for surgery in one place in one day. Once it opens, the child-friendly space-themed unit will allow us to treat an additional 2,300 children and young people every year.

Evelina London’s Director of Nursing, Janet Powell, said: “I’d like to thank Dame Ruth and her team for taking the time to visit Evelina London’s Children’s Hospital, to find out more about our specialist children’s services and to meet members of our nursing teams who work hard every day for children and their families. It was great to see nurses at varying stages of their career journey proudly talking about children’s nursing and why they find working at Evelina London so rewarding.”

NHS England Deputy Director of Children and Young People’s Nursing Kate Pye said: “We were delighted to visit Evelina London’s Children’s Hospital and have the opportunity to meet nursing colleagues and others delivering excellent care to children and young people across south London and south east England.

“The new Children’s Day Treatment Centre is a testament to the hard work and expertise of staff and will offer a fantastic new facility, improving services for children and young people.”
