Who can refer?
We provide management advice and assessment appointments for all local paediatricians in the South Thames Network hospitals for children and young people with suspected paediatric multisystem inflammatory syndrome (PIMS or PIMS-TS) and Kawasaki disease (KD).
How to refer
Clinically unstable patients
If you are concerned that your patient is clinically unstable, please contact the South Thames Retrieval Service (STRS) urgently.
For emergency referrals to STRS call 020 7188 5000 or 020 7803 9160.
All other referrals
All patients should be discussed with the Paediatric Infectious Disease (PID) team. Please get in touch with the team using the contact details in the box on this page.
Before a patient can be seen, you will also need to complete the PID referral form (Word 229Kb) and email it to gst-tr.echpims.ts@nhs.net. The referral form is required to book an appointment.
If the patient requires an urgent acute echocardiogram at Evelina London Children’s Hospital, please complete the form at the time of referral. For all other patients, please complete and submit the form when the patient is discharged from their current hospital.
Suspected PIMS-TS/KD patients who require a short-term review with an echocardiogram will usually be given a Rapid Access Service (RAS) appointment. Please consider whether an inpatient ward is more appropriate than an RAS appointment in an outpatient area. Alert the PID team if a patient meets the following criteria and transfer to a ward at Evelina London will be arranged:
- receiving intravenous (IV) fluids
- requires regular medication that cannot be delayed or given by a transfer nurse
- requires nursing observations more frequently than every four hours
Under normal circumstances, the first outpatient follow up appointment for patients across the South Thames Paediatric Network is at 2 weeks after discharge.
