About us
We are a growing team of specialist doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other health professionals who care for children affected by:
- severe infections, both acute (short-term) or chronic (long-term)
- unusual infections
- frequent infections
- tropical infections
- new or epidemic infections
- problems of their immune system.
Infection prevention and control is also an important part of our work, as is promoting the appropriate and responsible use of antibiotics and other antimicrobial medicines.
We work closely with specialist colleagues from every department of Evelina London and with the infectious diseases team for adult patients and the Department of Infection at Guys & St Thomas'. This is to make sure that every child has access to specialist infectious diseases and immunology expertise when they need it. We also provide support and advice regarding infections and immunity across South-East London and the South Thames Paediatric Network.
When children are recovering from severe infections but still require long courses of intravenous antibiotics, we support their ongoing treatment in their own homes, offering outpatient antibiotic therapy (p-OPAT). This helps to minimise disruption of family life wherever possible. Find out more about our outpatient antibiotic (p-OPAT) service.
We are part of the national network of ‘paediatric immunology and infectious diseases specialists (PIID)'. We collaborate closely with the other major PIID services across London and more widely.
