Overview
Evelina London has a specialist children's emergency department (A&E) which is part of the emergency floor at St Thomas' Hospital. It is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
A team of specialist doctors and nurses care for children aged 17 and under who have suffered a recent injury or accident, or who have developed a sudden illness. They have access to X-ray and scanning equipment to help assess patients quickly.
A play specialist, youth worker and liaison health visitor also support patients in the department.
Our busy department receives around 24,000 visits from children each year. We aim to diagnose, treat and discharge or admit all children within 4 hours (in line with national guidance). Children who need further treatment may be admitted to our short stay unit, which is next to the children's emergency department, or to a ward at Evelina London Children's Hospital, if their stay is likely to be longer.
We regularly take part in research. Recent projects have included:
- the emergency treatment of seizures
- the treatment of chest infections
