Former Evelina London doctor and TV presenter Dr Ranj Singh made a special visit to the hospital last week to launch Nicola J Rowley’s new book raising vital funds for patients.

Children at Evelina London enjoyed a special event to celebrate the launch of Nicola J Rowley’s latest illustrated book, James and the Birthday Balloon. Dr Ranj treated young people to a live reading along with author Nicola, giving a sneak preview of an exclusive audio version that comes free with each hard copy of the book.

Already a bestseller online, James and the Birthday Balloon is aimed at children aged 3-7 and carries a reassuring message for any child faced with having to go to hospital. It tells how James saves the day with a small act of kindness and a smile that soon spreads throughout the hospital.

Dr Ranj said, “I loved the wonderful, positive messaging of Nicola’s first book so when she approached me to help her, I jumped at the chance. It’s a big draw for me that every copy is raising vital funds for the work of Evelina London Children’s Hospital, where I used to work.”

Author Nicola is generously donating £1 to Evelina London for every hard copy of the picture book sold.

Deputy Director of Evelina London, Miranda Jenkins said, “We’re delighted to be the chosen charity for Nicola’s latest children’s book. The idea of spreading happiness in such a positive and uplifting way, and letting children know they have nothing to fear from coming to hospital, is so important. A huge thank you to Nicola.”

Nicola J Rowley said: “The character of James was inspired by my son who, when he was a baby, reached out to a little girl with a small act of kindness and stopped her crying. A simple smile can make a huge difference to others and I hope this book goes a long way to spread some magic and happiness through the wards of Evelina London Children’s Hospital, whilst also highlighting the amazing work the staff do on a daily basis.”

The book is available to buy online.
